The opening "joke" is kind of an inside joke. Without boring you with the details, the concept they are talking about was not explainable using Newtonian physics, and is a noted flaw of Newton's work, hence why Newton doesn't get the joke.~Of course, Einstein's befuddlement with basic addition is also a reference to the popular MYTH (yes, it's not actually true) that he failed basic math in school despite his brilliance.
